The late 1940s to 1960s is known are the golden age. It started right after the independence of India and Pakistan and set the bar really high as some of the best critically acclaimed movies were produced in this era. This resulted in the emergence of parallel cinema.
The classical Bollywood days occurred in the 1970s to the 1980s. This period was dominated by musical romance movies but as the time preceded violent crime and action movies were trending as well. This era introduced us to the great Javed-Salim duo that changed the standard of films.
Bollywood faced stagnancy two times; during the late 1960s and late 1980s. The second stationary phase occurred due to increased violent movies and reduced musical numbers. This era has given us some great artists that have delivered great movies. Action and comedy movies were also presented. This era also introduced art and independent movies that resulted in the development of Mumbai Noir, a genre that reflects the social issues of the city.
